UK Van Drivers leave their Cars behind This Summer

UK Van Drivers Ditch the Cars This Summer

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - July 25, 2010) - Van drivers are planning to leave their cars at home this summer, choosing instead to take the family on holiday in their bigger vehicles, according to a survey by Swinton Vans.

A survey of 1,000 van insurance customers found that 62% have decided that their family cars just aren't spacious or comfortable enough to be in for a long journey with children and luggage. Instead, drivers have decided to make life easier all round and use their vans to get to their holiday destinations.

While 53% of drivers are planning to only use their van for holidays in the UK, 27% are planning to use it to travel further afield and drive to France, Spain or Italy for their summer break, with a further 4% planning to drive even further than Europe.

On average, van drivers will spend 60 extra hours driving their vans on holiday during the month of August.

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton, said: "It's great that van drivers are confident enough to take drive their vans long distances, and it definitely makes sense to have as much space as possible in a holiday vehicle. But we would urge all drivers who are taking their vans on holiday to take extra care, especially if travelling with children on board.

"It is also vital that all van drivers refresh themselves with the Highway Code, in addition to making sure they are aware of the speed limits and driving laws in place in European countries. This will ensure that the family summer holiday will be safe and successful, and will also reduce accidents on the road and keep van insurance premiums to a minimum."
